Meet Kellie | How Kellie transformed her life through Keto

Meet Kellie, originally from Trenton, ON she spent five years studying at McGill in Montreal and has now moved to the big smoke, Toronto!
We are thrilled to feature another 'Keto-er', (if that is even a word) and continue to be intrigued by the keto life. Personally, I don't think we have the will power to go down that path, but we won't count it out.  The results we have seen so far from keto not only those we featured on our blog, but within the Instagram community is OUTSTANDING. This is definitely a lifestyle we would like to learn more about! Kellie's transformation is incredible and inspiring and we admire her determination to live her best life! Check out Kellie's story below.
 
Q: Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and why you began your fitness journey?

A: I was overweight my entire life and I tried and failed many times throughout to get healthy. I was the typical yoyo dieter. I struggled with binge eating disorder and felt like I was never going to be able to look the way I wanted to.

Two years ago I decided it was finally time to make a real change because I was tired of being unhappy with myself. I was 240lbs, extremely out of shape and genuinely unhappy with the direction I was headed with my health. So, something clicked in mind that this time I was really going to change my life in a sustainable way. No gimmicks - just real, lifelong changes. And I did it! I joined a crossfit gym and eventually started following the ketogenic diet. I transitioned from crossfit into lifting on my own, but I’ve been eating keto for just under two years now with no plans of ever stopping.
 
Q: What does a typical day look like for you? Meals, exercise, downtown?

A: I start my day at 4:30am to be in the gym for 5 (I’m an early bird and I love it!). I’ve cycled through quite a few different lifting programs but right now I’m doing Strong Curves which is a more lower body focused program. Post-gym I have a coffee and a protein bar before heading to work around 8. I tend to just eat two big meals a day, the first around noon which is always some sort of meat (probably leftovers from the night before) and lots of vegetables with a good fat source to top it off. I have my dinner around 630 and it’s a similar style to my lunch. I get to bed pretty early since I’m up so early to work out. Weekends are much more flexible and I just go with the flow.
 
Q: What is your ultimate goal?

A: My ultimate goal is to maintain a healthy/fit lifestyle for the rest of my life. I’ve finally found a way of doing it that makes me happy and I never want to let it go. I always have small goals that I’m working towards to keep myself disciplined, but really, I just want to take care of my body for the rest of the time I have here.
 
Q: What does the term “embrace your journey” mean to you?

A: To me “embrace your journey” means finding a way of being healthy that works for you. There are a million and one diets/exercise routines/lifting programs/etc out there, but you just need to find what works for you and when you do, don’t ever let it go. Embrace the fact that being healthy is a lifelong journey. Embrace how it makes you feel. Embrace the big and small changes you’ll encounter along the way. Embrace the fact that you’re doing yourself a favour by taking care of your health, and your body will thank you for it.
 
Q: Who/what are your biggest inspirations and why?

A: I get so much inspiration from Instagram which is crazy because I never imagined I would find such an incredibly supportive and inspiring community there! There are so many kick-ass people on there sharing their journeys and I love being a part of it. It’s such a good place to find recipes, success stories, fitness tips; really anything you could be looking for.
 
Q: What is your process for tackling a challenge and hard days?

A: My favourite quote is “if it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change you.” Nobody ever got better, faster, or stronger by staying consistently inside of their comfort zone. Challenges exist to provide us with opportunities to grow, so I embrace them. When I’m having a shitty workout/day/week/whatever I do everything I can to try to put a positive spin on it. For example, I have a bad workout? Well at least I worked out. Mindset is everything and it’s a powerful tool to keep at your disposal.

In terms of tackling challenges – I’m a planner. I’ll take a step back and think about the best way to overcome whatever obstacle I’m facing to set myself up for success. For example, when I began my fitness journey I knew I would need accountability, so I joined a crossfit gym because I knew there would be people there expecting me to show up every week.

Finally, accepting that failure is a part of life is so important. We can’t be perfect all the time, but what we can change the way we react when we do fail. I think that’s one of the biggest problems people face – when things don’t go their way, they give up. Don’t ever let anything defeat you; pick yourself up, brush yourself off and move forward instead of dwelling on the past.
 
Q: A piece of advice you'd like to give to others on their fitness journey

A: Stop waiting for the right time to take care of your health and just start right now! I promise you will always be able to find an excuse not to get started; birthdays, holidays, social events, weekends, etc. But those things will always be there and they aren’t going away. Instead of looking for reasons not to start, find reasons to start right now. Here’s one; you DESERVE to be healthy and happy and I promise you won’t ever regret taking care of yourself. When you stop looking for excuses, you’ll start finding results.

“Wow what a horrible workout I really regret going to the gym today.” – literally nobody ever.
